The Follow-Through
View practice +
"One small thing I am doing this week: ___."
  1. Pick ONE small promise you can actually keep this week โ€” lights out at the same time, coffee made before she asks, a real greeting at the door.
  2. Say it out loud first, so your spouse knows what is coming.
  3. Keep it. Not perfectly โ€” just visibly. Let them catch you doing it.
  4. Notice what happens to the trust between you by the weekend.
Why it works: trust in marriage is rarely rebuilt by big gestures. It grows the way it faded โ€” one small kept promise at a time. When your words and your actions match in small things, the big things start to feel safe again.

The Check-In

"How are you, really? Not the schedule โ€” you."
  1. Call the pause: stop what you are doing and turn toward each other.
  2. Ask the real question โ€” and mean it.
  3. Let the pause be there. Silence can be an answer.
  4. Receive before responding. Hear the whole truth first.
Why it works: small bids for connection โ€” a glance, a question, a sigh โ€” are the quiet threads that hold a marriage together. Answering them, even briefly, weaves trust one moment at a time.

The Undo

"That came out wrong โ€” let me take it back."
  1. Notice it. Feel the moment the tone turns sharp.
  2. Own it. Say, simply, "That came out wrong."
  3. Redo it. Take the sentence back and start it again, softer.
  4. Start again. Let the repair be the new beginning.
Why it works: a rough start does not have to determine the rest of the conversation. Catching it early and trying again gives both of you an opportunity to reset before the conversation escalates.

The Soft Start
View practice +
"Can I share something on my mind? I want us to hear each other."
  1. Pick a calm moment โ€” not mid-conflict.
  2. Open soft. One door, gently.
  3. Say the need, not the blame.
  4. Let them respond before you continue.
Why it works: how a difficult conversation begins can strongly influence where it goes. Opening gently invites your partner to meet you soft, instead of bracing for a fight.

The Same-Night Repair
View practice +
"We are on the same team. Let me try that again."
  1. Call the pause: name the moment before it hardens.
  2. Take twenty minutes apart to let the storm pass.
  3. Return soft โ€” lower your voice, open your hands.
  4. Close the day together. Do not sleep on the rupture.
Why it works: a hard moment does not have to become a hard week. Repairing the same night keeps the wound small and reminds you both that the bond is bigger than the disagreement.

Ask Before Fixing
View practice +
"Do you want advice, or do you just want me to listen?"
  1. Notice the urge to fix jumping up inside you.
  2. Hold it back โ€” just for a moment.
  3. Ask the question: "Advice, or just listening?"
  4. Honor the answer they give you.
Why it works: being heard is often the healing itself. Asking first shows respect for what your partner actually needs โ€” not what you assume.
Week 3 ยท Week of September 7
Name One Worry
View practice +
"There is something I have been carrying โ€” may I share it with you?"
  1. Set the stage: phones away, quiet space.
  2. Name one worry you have been carrying.
  3. Listen without fixing. Only "thank you for telling me."
  4. Close as a team: one hug, one breath, together.
Why it works: worries weigh less when they are spoken aloud. Being received without judgment builds the safety that real intimacy needs.
